They lowered their material expectations, found ways to enjoy their newfound leisure time, and derived more happiness from living harmoniously with nature. The standard of living declined, but most Ecotopians did not seem to mind. It prided itself on a "steady-state" (or no-growth) economy that recycled virtually all wastes, ran on solar power, and reduced the work week to 20 hours. The fictional new nation outlawed the internal combustion engine, did away with most cars, replaced many city streets with streams, and planted flowers in potholes. Set twenty-four years into the future, in 1999, the book portrayed how a part of the United States-northern California, Oregon, and Washington-had seceded from the rest of the country in 1980 and established the new country of "Ecotopia," an ecological utopia. ![]() ![]() While the entire activities of the book itself are grounded entirely in Guyana (then British Guiana), the book's main imaginary character, Joshua Williams (called Josh) depicts a life that resonates broadly across our Caribbean culture in the 1960's, and more or less, depicts the generally live-loose nature of our Caribbean people in those times. In reality, all of the events mentioned in the book and played by its main characters are actually a combination of experiences of the author and other persons, which had sometimes occurred in different places, to different persons (other than the author) and at different time periods, but arrayed together to form one consistent line of occurrences. ![]() Boyhood Days - Book two, is part of a five piece collection of Caribbean Narratives which is revered to some extent, on the actual experiences of the author and a host of other people in his time, and collectively combined to form a single story. ![]() ![]() About halfway through, details and plot points begin to diverge slightly, leading to a different ending. On the other hand, Arthurian literature as a literary product has not only influenced the evolution of the European literary canon, but has itself been struck by several literary and philosophical concepts. Beginning with the Roman and early medieval tradition culminating in Boethius De Consolatione Philosophiae scholars have tried to apply the concept of Fortuna to nearly every literary production from Cicero up to Shakespeare’s Renaissance conception of medieval tragedy and Fortune’s influence upon it. The concept of Fortuna and her wheel, or to be more general of fate and fortune itself in ancient and medieval literary and philosophical culture has been the topic of numerous investigations stretching over cultural and temporal boundaries. 2.2 Boethius and the De Consolatione PhilosophiaeĤ.2.1 Fortune, Arthur and the Nine Worthies ![]() ![]() ![]() Many concepts and story tropes that were introduced in this run would further reappear along in other stories by Morrison, but most notably his cerebral style of storytelling really finds some roots in this series. ![]() ![]() Grant Morrison’s run on Animal Man was one of his first american works, and really paved the way for the rest of his work at DC comics.
